A New Lens on African Heritage: Recontextualizing the Met’s Arts of Africa Galleries

Overview:

Join us for an inside look at a unique collaboration to recontextualize the Met’s Arts of Africa Galleries by telling the stories of African heritage places. Led by World Monuments Fund and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this initiative aims to foreground the richness and diversity of cultural landmarks across the African continent through a series of 11 short documentary films and highlight the critical work to preserve these unique sites. 

This panel discussion will feature guest speakers Alisa LaGamma (Ceil and Michael E. Pulitzer Curator in Charge of The Met’s Michael C. Rockefeller Wing), Sosena Solomon (visual artist), and Tawanda Mukwende (Lecturer of Archaeology at Great Zimbabwe University). Welcome remarks byYaw Nyarko(Director of NYU Africa House-Center for Technology and Economic Development). It will be moderated by World Monuments Fund Vice President of Programs, Jonathan S. Bell.
