Africa House was delighted to sponsor the NYU African Students Union for their 11th Annual Africa Night Gala themed “Afahye: Celebration of Life and Prosperity” to commemorate Africa’s culture and beauty through food, music, and various performances.

Post Event Report From ASU:

On November 16th, 2019, the African Students Union had our 11th annual Africa Night Gala. This year we named the event Afahye, after a Ghanaian festival that celebrates good health and prosperity. We had a plethora of performances this year including Noel Hayes, who did a Afrobeats medley on the saxophone, wAVE dance team from the University of Pennsylvania, AfroPowerHouse dance team from the City College of New York, Ijoya dance team from Columbia University, Safiatu Diagana, a first-year poet, Jovan Perez, a third-year Tisch student singer, KweQu Dinero, a rising Afrobeats singer, and ASU’s very own dance team, AfroSeke. We also had a wide array of food and drinks.

This year we honored Aesetou Diallo with the Future of Africa Student Award and Professor Nicholas James Wahutu with the Outstanding Faculty Award. We had over 275 people attend this year Afahye and we had the opportunity to showcase African culture and how it has influenced the Diaspora.

Through Africa Night, ASU was able to gain new members and relate to other Africans in the New York area. Without the support of NYU Africa House, Africa Students Union would have not been able to have a successful Africa Night.

About the NYU African Students Union (ASU):

The African Students Union exists to provide a means for the meaningful discussion, exploration, and celebration of all things politically, socially, and culturally African. We want to create an environment on campus where people who are educated on African topics or wish to be can come together to have fun, discuss and enjoy a variety of African dishes.
