Images from the event.
On Friday, November 20, 2015, staff and friends of Africa House participated in a special private tour of the Kongo: Power and Majesty exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tour was led by Dr. Alisa LaGamma, Ceil and Michael E. Pulitzer Curator in Charge, Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Kongo: Power and Majesty is a landmark presentation of Kongo art, bringing together stunning Kongo masterworks including luxury textiles, delicately carved ivories, and monumental Mangaaka power figures from institutions around the world, reflecting a rich historical and cultural legacy going back five hundred years. This landmark exhibition of Kongo art presents a radical re-understanding of Africa’s relationship with the West, challenging misconceptions and offering a fresh new perspective on Kongo history and artistic ingenuity.
