Decolonizing the Curriculum- A South African Case Study
A conversation with Dr. Jonathan Jansen

The presentation will describe the origins and impacts of the decolonization movement in South Africa (2015-2017) with a particular focus on the very different meanings attributed to the term "decolonization" among students and faculty across ten different universities, and what those different meanings implied for the radical curriculum change as envisaged by protesting students.
Jonathan Jansen is Distinguished Professor of Education at Stellenbosch University and President of the Academy of Science of South Africa. He is a curriculum theorist whose work is on the politics of knowledge. He leads a national Future Professors Programme and mentors university leaders. His recent books are The decolonization of knowledge (Cambridge University Press), Corruption in universities (Wits University Press), and Racial logics and medicine in South Africa (Springer). He was recently inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the International Academy of Education.
